Refrigerator Not Cooling

Common refrigerator cooling problems, useful information to gather, and when to request appliance repair.

Updated 2026-08-27 • Educational content

A refrigerator that is warm can have airflow, fan, defrost, sensor, control or sealed-system problems. Before service, note whether the freezer is also warm, whether fans are running, whether frost is visible and whether the problem began suddenly or gradually. The model number is also very useful.

What you can observe safely

  • Note exactly when the problem happens and whether it is constant or intermittent.
  • Write down the brand and model number if it is easy to access safely.
  • Take a photo of visible leaks, error codes or control displays when appropriate.
  • Avoid disassembly, live electrical work, gas work or anything that creates a safety risk.

When to stop using the equipment

Stop use and request qualified help when there is active leaking near electrical equipment, a burning smell, smoke, repeated breaker trips, suspected gas odor, flooding, sewage backup or another condition that may create property damage or a safety hazard.
